Dispersal parameters

Stacks Image 277
Section 6 entails parameters relevant for dispersal.
The 1000 seed weights for the included species were taken from the Seed Information Database (SID) of Kew Gardens and are accessible under item 6.1. We assume here that annual seed production is proportional to the crown surface area. Thus, the second parameter holds the seed densities per crown surface area which is being used as the proportional factor in this relationship. So far, this parameter has not been set on the basis of species-specific data and is experimental, though.
In principle, seeds or propagules are considered to be dispersed by wind in a simple manner according to Niklas (1994). Additionally, we added a simplistic routine to simulate seed/propagule dispersal by water. Once again, you may consider the latter form of dispersal experimental.
